Red Rock Canyon | Sloan Canyon

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (NCA) is a 196,000-acre complex administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The NCA is one of BLM's crown jewels, a nationwide treasure as well as a unit in the newly established National Landscape Conservation System. The NCA offers a multitude of recreational opportunities from camping, picnicking, biking, mountain biking and horseback riding to wildlife and wildflower viewing, sightseeing and photography, and areas for quiet contemplation. The NCA is also a world-class climbing area.

  • Dramatic geologic landforms, largely unspoiled panoramic vistas, springs and ephemeral water, a diversity of desert plants and animals, micro-environments in canyon bottoms; all these factors and more enhance Red Rock Canyon NCA as a vital national asset.

  • A unique attraction in Red Rock NCA is Mount Wilson; at 7,068 feet, the highest sandstone peak along the steep escarpment. Rock climbing has become internationally known. Climbers from across the United States and from around the world find that when other areas are snowed in, Red Rock NCA usually offers pleasant weather and abundant sunshine.

  • The combination of the area's spectacular rock formations and stunning vistas has made Red Rock Canyon a favorite backdrop for numerous movies.


    Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area
    The Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area is a 48,438 acre Complex administered by the Bureau of Land Management on the south edge of the Las Vegas Valley.

    Facts:

  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and one of the most significant cultural resources in Nevada. Includes more than 300 rock art panels with nearly 1,700 designs representing native cultures dating from the Archaic to the historic era.

  • The geology of the McCullough Mountains is largely undeformed and provides a window to see what the area was like millions of years ago.

  • Exhibits a nearly complete spectrum of plants and animals one would expect to find in the Mojave Desert, including small communities of isolated vegetation types and plant and animals that are listed as threatened or a species of concern.

  • Contains the widest range of volcanic features in the lower Colorado River Basin.

  • Contains the South McCullough Wilderness Area which is one of the closest legislated wilderness areas in the country to an urban center.

  • Sloan Canyon is/was a focal point for communicating canyon History and as such, a significant location in the larger Paiute Cultural geography.
